A Statement for Armenia
We have not done our part.
In addition to the chaos and pain this year has brought our world, Armenia was robbed of its ancestral land in the Caucasus Mountains after a violent and unjust six-week-long war with Azerbaijan. Last Tuesday, a peace deal was struck that forced Armenia to cede territory which was rightfully theirs.
During these pivotal six weeks, we were silent as an organization and as individual artists. Distracted by current events that made our headlines, we ignored a war that was ripping apart a nation and those very close to us. Though we benefited from producing a play that centered the Armenian Genocide last year, we did not make the effort to use our voices when it really mattered. We’re embarrassed. And we’re sorry.
As a nonprofit organization who cares about its community, and as humans who make up that organization, it’s vital that we make the effort to listen, speak up, and act when it’s asked of us. We’ve learned lessons, but at the expense of loved ones. There is more work to do.
